RUM vs Session-Replay-Only Cost 2026
Some tools sell session replay as the entire product (Hotjar, Mouseflow). Others sell RUM with replay bundled or added (Datadog, Sentry, LogRocket). The pricing and buyer profiles are very different.
Two different product families
Dedicated session-replay tools — Hotjar, Mouseflow, Inspectlet, Smartlook. Originally built for product and UX teams to watch how users behave: which buttons they click, where they get stuck, what they ignore. Pricing is per-monthly-recorded-session at moderate rates ($39-$300/month range). Output is a polished replay player + heatmaps + funnel analysis. Buyer is product manager or UX researcher.
RUM tools with replay bundled or added — LogRocket, Sentry, Datadog RUM, Fullstory (post-pivot), AWS CloudWatch RUM. Started from performance and error monitoring then added session replay as a feature. Replay is one of several signals (performance metrics, errors, custom events). Buyer is engineering team or SRE.
Cost comparison at 50K sessions/month
| Vendor | Category | Cost/month at 50K sessions | Buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotjar | Replay-only | ~$80 | UX/Product |
| Mouseflow | Replay-only | ~$159 | UX/Product |
| Fullstory (paid) | Replay + analytics | Quote only | Product/Eng |
| LogRocket Team | RUM + replay | $295 | Engineering |
| Sentry Team + replay | RUM + replay (errors-first) | ~$200 incl overage | Engineering |
| Datadog RUM | RUM + replay bundled | ~$225 | Engineering/SRE |
Which to pick by use case
- Product manager wants to watch how users use the new feature. Hotjar or Fullstory. Dedicated replay-only tools have better heatmap, funnel, and qualitative-research workflows.
- Engineer debugging a production bug needs to see what the user did before the error. Sentry or LogRocket. Replay tied to error context with stack traces, source maps, and console logs.
- SRE needs to correlate RUM with backend APM during incident response. Datadog or Dynatrace. Unified observability pane.
- Both product and engineering need replay on the same data. Fullstory paid tier or LogRocket Team. Both span the boundary, with Fullstory leaning product-first and LogRocket engineering-first.
The double-purchase trap
Organisations frequently buy a replay-only tool (because UX bought it first) and then a RUM-with-replay tool (because Engineering bought it later) without realising the products overlap. Audit your observability vendor list for replay duplication every 12 months, consolidation saves $100-$500/month for typical mid-market organisations.
Where to go next
- For RUM with replay bundled, see Datadog RUM, AWS CloudWatch RUM.
- For RUM with replay add-on, see Sentry, Dynatrace RUM.
- For replay as core product, see LogRocket, Fullstory.
