The pricing model
Completely free with no published paid tier. Privacy-focused; lighter feature set than commercial RUM tools (no session replay).
Genuinely free, with real constraints
Cloudflare Web Analytics is the rare case in this category where “free” means free without a paid tier looming above it. There is no Pro, no Business, no Enterprise version of Web Analytics specifically, it's a single free product. Cloudflare monetises through its broader stack (CDN, R2 storage, Workers, Zero Trust) and treats Web Analytics as a value-add for customers already on the platform.
The product captures the three Core Web Vitals metrics, Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), plus basic page-view counts segmented by URL, country, browser, and device. It also captures simple engagement data (bounce-equivalent rate, average pages per session) but nothing approaching the depth of a commercial RUM tool.
What it does not include
- No session replay. If you need to see what a user actually did before an error, Cloudflare cannot help, pick LogRocket, Sentry, Fullstory, or Datadog.
- No JavaScript error tracking. Uncaught exceptions, stack traces, source maps, none of these are captured.
- No custom event API. You cannot send arbitrary business events (signup, add-to-cart, purchase) to Cloudflare Web Analytics. Goal tracking and conversion funnels are not part of the product.
- No alerting. Web Analytics is a dashboard product, there is no alert API, no PagerDuty integration, no “LCP regressed past 2.5s” trigger.
- Limited retention disclosure. Cloudflare does not publish a precise retention window; observation suggests data is queryable for at least 6 months.
Privacy positioning
Cloudflare markets Web Analytics on privacy: no cookies are set, no third-party fingerprinting is performed, and the product does not require a cookie consent banner under GDPR or PECR (in most jurisdictions). The trade-off is that user-level analytics (unique users, returning user rates) are aggregated rather than per-individual.
How Cloudflare compares
- Versus SpeedCurve, Cloudflare is free and captures the same Core Web Vitals metrics. SpeedCurve adds waterfall analysis, third-party impact, performance budgets, and competitive benchmarking, features Cloudflare does not offer.
- Versus Datadog RUM, Cloudflare is free vs Datadog's $4.50/1K sessions. Cloudflare lacks session replay, error tracking, custom events, and alerting.
- Versus Sentry, Sentry's free tier covers 5K errors + 50 replays/month. Different product entirely, Sentry is errors-first, Cloudflare is web-vitals-first.
- Versus Grafana Faro (self-hosted), both are zero-cost RUM options. Cloudflare is hosted and effortless; Faro requires your own backend infrastructure but captures session-level performance + error data that Cloudflare omits.
When Cloudflare Web Analytics is the right choice
- Your site already proxies through Cloudflare and you want one-click RUM setup.
- You only need Core Web Vitals capture (e.g., for SEO/Google Search Console signal validation).
- You are pre-launch or hobby scale and don't want to pay anything.
- Privacy/cookie-less analytics is a regulatory requirement (GDPR + PECR jurisdictions).
When Cloudflare Web Analytics is the wrong choice
- You need session replay (any commercial debugging workflow).
- You need JavaScript error tracking with source maps and alerting.
- You need conversion funnel or custom event tracking.
- You need automated regression alerting on Core Web Vitals.
